Chitosan is a type of fiber taken from the exoskeleton of insects and the shells of crustaceans such as shrimps, clams and lobsters. It is regarded as a “fat blocker” or “fat trapper.” Chitosan helps reduce the amount of fat absorbed in your gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, it may reduce total cholesterol as well as LDL “bad” cholesterol. It may also prevent your body from absorbing fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K. Magnesium may also not be absorbed.

Early studies in people have hinted that varying forms of chitosan might also help in those suffering from Crohn’s disease, dental cavities, periodontitis, anemia due to dialysis in people with kidney failure, and those who have plastic surgery using donor tissue.
Indication: Obesity
Allergen warning: contains shellfish
Possible side effects: constipation, gas, nausea, stomach upset
Possible drug interactions: blood thinners like warfarin, some antiviral agents

Inulin is a type of prebiotic. It is a starchy substance found in a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs, not not digested or absorbed in the stomach. It stays in the bowel and helps certain beneficial bacteria to grow.

Indications: weight loss, constipation, diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, high triglycerides
Safe dosage: in adults, 8-18 grams daily for 6-12 weeks, or  10-40 grams by mouth daily for 4-8 weeks
Most common side effects: bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and cramps (more severe in those taking more than 30 grams a day)
Minor drug interactions: Antidiabetes drugs (monitor blood sugar closely)
